Chapter 18
âPlease tell me weâve got something,â Detective Dylan Lowry sighed when Sergeant Don Naples entered his office.
âYes and no,â was the pragmatic answer.
âIâm listening,â Lowry leaned forward.
âWe got labs back on those brown fibers.â
âAnd?â
âFake fur.â
âFake furâ¦as in the kind of fake fur that might come from a reindeer costume?â Dylan raised his eyebrows.
âPrecisely that kind, yeah,â Sergeant Naples nodded.
âSo those fibers were found at the crime scene, and on the floor of Rosalie Martinâs garage, and they came from a reindeer suit,â Lowry mused.
âWeâre still in the process of confirming that the garage fibers match the crime scene fibers, but yes, it certainly looks that way,â Naples agreed.
âThereâs something that doesnât quite add up, though,â Lowry thought aloud.
âWhich is?â
âRosalie Martin was in the trailer when the reindeer approached, and was in the trailer when the reindeer was at the daycare during the middle of the work day.â
âEmmett Marshall also described the reindeer as being around his height and weight,â Naples pointed out. âThat definitely doesnât sound like Ms. Martin.â
âWe have another guy to check out,â Lowry changed the subject, frustrated.
âWho?â
âEmmett Marshall lives with a woman who recently got divorced. Since she, her daughter, and Marshall all got similar messages, I have to wonder if the explosion wasnât supposed to take out Marshall, not Steve Ellis,â the detective explained.
âSo youâre going to check out the ex,â Naples guessed.
âExactly, and while I do that, youâre going to talk to Melanie Halouska from the daycare center, and Ben the busboy from the diner where Alison Kramer works. Iâll also check with costume rental stores to see if anyone locally rented a reindeer costume before the incident, and whether or not theyâve returned it.â
âYou got it,â Sergeant Naples rose from the chair that heâd plopped in when he entered Dylanâs office. âYou donât think the ex-wife and kid are in danger, do you?â
âI hope not, but itâs a possibility. I want to get this thing wrapped up as soon as we can. That family doesnât deserve to be going through this, especially at Christmas time,â Dylan remarked grimly.
âI hear ya,â Naples agreed. âIâll check in as soon as I find something. Hey, about that reindeer costumeâ¦â
âYeah?â
âIf I was gonna use something like that to commit a crimeâ¦Iâd just buy it off the internet.â
âWell then, letâs hope our killer isnât quite as smart as you,â Lowry sighed.
