Chapter 18

“Please tell me we’ve got something,” Detective Dylan Lowry sighed when Sergeant Don Naples entered his office.

“Yes and no,” was the pragmatic answer.

“I’m listening,” Lowry leaned forward.

“We got labs back on those brown fibers.”

“And?”

“Fake fur.”

“Fake fur…as in the kind of fake fur that might come from a reindeer costume?” Dylan raised his eyebrows.

“Precisely that kind, yeah,” Sergeant Naples nodded.

“So those fibers were found at the crime scene, and on the floor of Rosalie Martin’s garage, and they came from a reindeer suit,” Lowry mused.

“We’re still in the process of confirming that the garage fibers match the crime scene fibers, but yes, it certainly looks that way,” Naples agreed.

“There’s something that doesn’t quite add up, though,” Lowry thought aloud.

“Which is?”

“Rosalie Martin was in the trailer when the reindeer approached, and was in the trailer when the reindeer was at the daycare during the middle of the work day.”

“Emmett Marshall also described the reindeer as being around his height and weight,” Naples pointed out. “That definitely doesn’t sound like Ms. Martin.”

“We have another guy to check out,” Lowry changed the subject, frustrated.

“Who?”

“Emmett Marshall lives with a woman who recently got divorced. Since she, her daughter, and Marshall all got similar messages, I have to wonder if the explosion wasn’t supposed to take out Marshall, not Steve Ellis,” the detective explained.

“So you’re going to check out the ex,” Naples guessed.

“Exactly, and while I do that, you’re going to talk to Melanie Halouska from the daycare center, and Ben the busboy from the diner where Alison Kramer works. I’ll also check with costume rental stores to see if anyone locally rented a reindeer costume before the incident, and whether or not they’ve returned it.”

“You got it,” Sergeant Naples rose from the chair that he’d plopped in when he entered Dylan’s office. “You don’t think the ex-wife and kid are in danger, do you?”

“I hope not, but it’s a possibility. I want to get this thing wrapped up as soon as we can. That family doesn’t deserve to be going through this, especially at Christmas time,” Dylan remarked grimly.

“I hear ya,” Naples agreed. “I’ll check in as soon as I find something. Hey, about that reindeer costume…”

“Yeah?”

“If I was gonna use something like that to commit a crime…I’d just buy it off the internet.”

“Well then, let’s hope our killer isn’t quite as smart as you,” Lowry sighed.
